Dr. Garland has reported that keeping serum levels at the 40 to 60 (ng/ml) reduced breast and colon cancers by almost 70% and over 75% reduction of common cold and flu symptoms.

In addition, research suggests the incidence of autoimmune disorders such as multiple sclerosis increase in frequency as one moves away from the equator. Diminishing levels of direct sunlight seems to be the culprit.

While our bodies need ultra-violet (UVB) rays to stimulate production of Vitamin D in the body, almost all sunscreens block UVB rays. This is not a call for a return to daily sun bathing. But experts suggest about 15 minutes per day in the later morning or early afternoon is appropriate.

Getting the needed 5000IU of Vitamin D on a daily basis from food is a challenge for most people. For example if a person drank 10 glasses of Vitamin D milk everyday, which is highly unlikely, they would gain just 1000 IU.

A daily dose of sunshine coupled with a high quality Vitamin D supplement is the most effective way to get the needed intake level. Avoid synthetic Vitamin D and use only natural Vitamin D supplements.
