Senior Health | Detox Your Body and Stay Healthy Longer
By Jan Shapan :
Most of us enter the senior years feeling pretty good. But suddenly, we find ourselves and our friends encountering all types of ailments, aches and pains that seem to just appear.
What we are finding is that our bodies have an incredible capacity to withstand all types of problems and assaults but over time its resilience declines. One of the leading causes of problems among adults and especially seniors is the build up of toxins in the body.
The problems related to toxins often stem from our lifestyles. In almost everything we eat, there are preservatives, various additives we can’t even pronounce, and chemicals that cause problems in the body and affect our long term health. Beyond what we eat, our bodies must also contend with air pollution, dust, smoke and other types of irritants that contribute to toxicity in our bodies.
These caustic toxins build up in our bodies, sometimes without our knowledge and finally manifest as heart conditions, digestive problems and lung disorders.
Periodically we must take active steps to detox our bodies. This process must not be taken lightly. Before starting any detox process, consult your physician to be sure you take an approach that will do the job but not cause more harm than good.
In addition there are detox solutions that are targeted to a specific part of the body. For example, you may use a detox solution that is focused just on the digestive system while another solution deals with urinary system, or lungs.
Beyond the process itself, most detox processes involve a change in habits especially what you eat. Becoming aware of what you eat and how your eating habits are contributing to your toxic condition is a first step to positive long term results.
Most health advisors recommend the use of natural products and methods for a body detox and to achieve the best results an on-going or regular detox process is best.
One of the easiest natural detox solutions is simply drinking more water. Most seniors are not drinking enough water each day. If you weigh 160 pounds, you should strive to drink 50% of your body weight in ounces or 80 ounces of water.
Another effective detox is daily exercise. Movement and sweating helps to remove toxins from the body. Target at least 20 minutes per day, 3 times per week for exercise even if your approach is a fast walk.
Are there any side effects?
Some have experienced flu like symptoms, fatigue and headaches after a detox but most of these are gone after a day or two. Expect to visit the bathroom more frequently since the detox process stimulates the elimination process through stool and urination.
Preparing for a detox requires people to stop drinking caffeine drinks such as coffee or sodas. This can cause headaches so a slow decline in levels of caffeine should begin prior to the detox to avoid this problem.
When the process is complete, you should feel much better, have more energy, better looking skin and eyes and likely lost some weight. In addition, you will experience more emotional stability than before. Your digestive systems will be working better and you will find more restful sleep as well. Most importantly, you will be enabling your body to more effectively manage the daily stresses and challenges of life which will lead to a longer more robust life.
